Online Map of Leafy Spurge Distribution Within Project Area
Assembling the data
We set out to compile all of the existing data inside our project area on Leafy Spurge distributions. This was a high priority activity so we could get an accurate idea of current conditions across the landscape. We started compiling all of the known Leafy Spurge distribution data with the help from the Idaho State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) Stephen Cox, the Greater Yellowstone Coalition Committee (GYCC) Kim Johnson, and others. We started this process with 10,300 documented leafy spurge infestations. As the project continued and more partners came on line, so did the number of leafy spurge infestations. To date we have gathered information on 23,390 known infestation records.
Reasons for the map
In order for land managers to use leafy spurge distribution data, they have to have immediate access to it. We decided to try creative and resourceful ways to share our data online. Village GIS has just recently developed an online tool for viewing maps inside Google Maps. Together we were able to develop a simple, cost effective method for disseminating our leafy spurge distribution information to interested parties via the internet.
